Under all of the entity tabs (Contacts, Organizations, Cases, Opportunities, Calendar, etc) you can define a search and save it for another occasion.

Saved Searches are also a key aspect of creating New Reports in the Report Builder where the initial report filter is, in fact, a Saved Search.

Search results are also available for mass updating records or small email sends to a group.
